What Are The Holidays That Are Observed By Outsourced Workers In India?

Do you have outsourced workers that reside in India? When you are scheduling their assignments, you should be aware of the holidays that are observed by workers in India.

Typically, there are 14 to 20 public holidays that are observed by government workers and most private sector workers as well, including the following:

A.  Diwali (Deepavali)
B.  Idu’l Fitr
C.  Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday
D.  Budha Purnima
E.  Independence Day
F.  Christmas Day
G.  Good Friday
H.  Dussehra (Vijay Dashmi)
I.  Republic Day
J. Guru Nanak’s Birthday
K. Muharram
L. Idu’l Zuha
M. Prophet Mohammad’s Birthday
N. Mahavir Jayanti

Additionally, government workers are also permitted to select three more holidays of their choosing from the following list:

A.  Dussehra
B.  Pongal
C.  Rath Yatra
D.  Ram Navami
E.  Maha Shivratri
F.  Ganesh Chaturthi / Vinayak Chaturthi
G.  Makar Sankaranti
H.  Janamashtami (Vaishnavi)
I.  Onam
J. Holi
K. Sri Panchami / Basanta Panchami
L. Vishu, Vaisakhi, Gudi Padava 1st Navratra, Nauraj, Vaisakhadi, Bhag Bihu, Mashadi Ugadi, Chaitra Sukladi, Cheti Chand, Chhath Pooja, and Karva Chauth

Employees in India that do not work for the government typically have fewer holidays than their government employee counterparts. However, there are three public holidays that are followed by all employees regardless of which sector they work for. Those mandatory holidays, are:

A.  Independence Day
B.  Republic Day
C.  Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday

Also of note, some of the holidays may have their dates altered depending on the cycle of the moon. This may seem strange but if you give this some thought, it is really not that unusual. For example, Easter, Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, and Labor Day are common holidays for working in the USA that fall on a different date almost every year.

If your outsourced workers reside in India, you should also be aware that vacation days will be expected as well as the observance of their holidays. When you are planning the assignments that you are preparing for your outsourced workers in India, please be considerate and adjust your schedule to accommodate their working holidays. After all, happy workers are much more productive workers!
